SubSync: Curing Subscription Fatigue with AI
An AI-powered mobile financial assistant that tracks recurring subscriptions, alerts users before free trials expire, and provides 1-click cancellation paths.
Overview
Subscription fatigue is real. The average person juggles 12+ recurring subscriptions across streaming platforms, software tools, and digital services. While the individual costs seem small, they quietly drain bank accounts—especially when hidden price hikes and forgotten free trials are factored in.
SubSync is an AI-powered financial companion designed to solve this. It securely scans bank data to build a predictive timeline of upcoming charges, alerts users 48 hours before free trials renew, and provides seamless 1-click cancellation paths to combat corporate "dark patterns."

The Problem & Context
Managing subscriptions today requires intense mental math. I started this project by asking one core question: Why is it so easy to sign up for a service, but so stressful to keep track of it?
Pain Points:
- The "Free Trial" Trap: Users sign up for a 7-day trial, forget to set a calendar reminder, and get locked into an unwanted yearly billing cycle.
- Subscription Creep: Companies quietly raise their prices by $1 or $2. Users rarely notice until months later.
- Dark Patterns: When a user finally decides to cancel, they are forced through a labyrinth of confusing menus, hidden buttons, and guilt-trip messaging.

Ideation & Paper Sketches
Before jumping into Figma, I always start with pen and paper. For SubSync, the biggest challenge was figuring out how to display a user's subscriptions chronologically without overwhelming them with data.
I sketched out multiple variations of the timeline and bottom sheet cancellation modals to ensure the core user flows felt completely frictionless.

The Solution: Core Features
1. Smart Sync & Manual Entry
Users can securely connect their bank via Plaid for automatic sync—an LLM processes messy bank statement strings and instantly categorizes them with clean logos. For those who prefer full control, there's also an option to manually add and manage subscriptions.
2. The Predictive Timeline
Instead of a static list of expenses, the Home Dashboard is designed as a chronological timeline. It gives users a glanceable, immediate answer to: "What is hitting my bank account this week?"
3. The Free Trial Protector & Price Creep Detection
The app monitors historical pricing data. If a subscription quietly raises its price, the app flags it with an "AI Insight" badge. For free trials, SubSync sends a proactive push notification 48 hours before the card is charged.
4. "AI Cancel For Me"
This is the hero feature. Instead of forcing users to navigate a merchant's confusing cancellation maze, SubSync maintains a database of direct cancellation deep-links. For stubborn merchants, the AI Copilot can literally draft the cancellation email on the user's behalf.

Conclusion & Learnings
Designing SubSync taught me how to balance complex data with a minimalist interface. By focusing deeply on a specific user pain point—subscription anxiety—I was able to design features that felt like genuine problem-solving rather than just aesthetic UI updates.
The biggest takeaway from this project was understanding that good UX in fintech isn't about showing the user all their data; it's about showing them the right data at exactly the right time.
